STORRS, CT (December 23) -- Peter Soteropoulos, a University of Connecticut baseball team standout from 2000-2003, has been selected to represent Greece in the 2004 Olympics, which will take place in Athens. Soteropoulos, a prospect in the St. Louis Cardinal farm system, is the 15th Olympian to attend the University of Connecticut.
Soteropoulos finished his career at UConn with a .371 batting average, nine home runs and 128 RBI’s. He was also 13-9 with an ERA of 4.40 in 37 career appearances on the mound for Connecticut.
The Greek government requires its Olympians to have at least one grandparent who was born in Greece; Soteropoulos’ grandparents were born in Greece, making the Peabody, Mass. native eligible. Furthermore, by virtue of being the host nation, Greece can enter a team in any sport in the Olympics without pre-qualifying.
