UConn Sweeps BIG EAST Rival Boston College in Three

STORRS, CT (Nov. 9) - With double-figure kill performances by three players, the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team swept BIG EAST opponent Boston College 3-0 at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) led all players with 14 kills, Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, MD) tallied 12 kills, and Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) chipped in 10 kills along with a team-high 14 digs.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 17-12 overall and 4-6 in the BIG EAST, while Boston College drops to 17-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
The game marked the last home contest for UConn’s three seniors, Raftyn Birath (Marshall, MN), Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) and Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA). The three were honored prior to the match in the Hartford Courant/CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute.
UConn downed the Eagles by scores of 30-19, 30-24, 30-18, and out-hit their opponent .233 to .024 for the match. Crawley paced the Huskies in game one with five kills and no errors on six attempts, and closed out her strong performance with the game-winning kill to put the Huskies up 1-0 for the match.
Hadenfeldt took control in game two, tallying six kills and six digs. The Eagles gave UConn a strong fight down the stretch, and trailed by just two points at 24-22. Key kills by Birath and Ashley followed, and consecutive errors by Boston College put the Huskies back up by a comfortable lead which they held to the end.
Ashley was dead-on in the third game, knocking down five kills in as many attempts. The Huskies recorded 14 team kills to the Eagles’ nine, as well as five fewer errors than their opponent in the game.
Crawley hit with outstanding accuracy for the match, recording her 14 kills on just 18 attempts with only two errors for a match-high hitting percentage of .667. Crawley and Brittany Conover (Bargersville, IN) tied for team-high honors in blocks with five apiece. All three seniors had solid performances in their last game at home. Erbez tallied a match-high 38 assists along with eight digs, Coss was strong on defense with nine digs, and Birath recorded four kills, seven digs and two blocks.
Boston College was led by Alison Shepp with nine kills, and Allison Andersen with seven kills and eight digs. The Eagles’ Katie Andersen led all players in the match with 17 digs.
The Huskies will conclude the regular season with three road games, starting with a non-conference match at Fairfield on Tuesday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m.
