ERIE, PA (Nov. 8) - The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team held a 4-2 lead after the second period, but eventually were handed a heartbreaking defeat by Mercyhurst, who rallied with three goals in the third to UConn’s one, and went on to score the game-winner in overtime. The Huskies out-shot Mercyhurst 45-38 in the game, but the Lakers capitalized on three of six power play situations.
The win leaves Mercyhurst undefeated in the Atlantic Hockey Association with a 3-0 record, and moves them to 4-1 overall. UConn drops to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the AHA.
UConn junior Beau McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA) started things off in the high-scoring game in which all eleven goals were scored by different players. Just under halfway through the first period, McLaughin tallied the Huskies’ first off an assist from Chris Uber (Ithaca, NY). The Lakers answered the goal just 25 seconds later when Adam Tackaberry got his team on the board during a power play situation.
The Huskies were on fire in the second period, starting with freshman Scott McDougall’s (Mansfield, MA) second goal of the season just 5:22 into second period play. With 7:03 remaining in the period, the Huskies’ leading returning scorer from last season, Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, MN), netted his first goal of the season with an assist from Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, MN). Less than 30 seconds later the Huskies took a 4-1 lead after Uber tallied his first goal of the year with an assist by Eric St. Arnauld (Marquette, MI).
Mercyhurst’s Dave Borrelli scored the team’s second power play goal of the night with 23 seconds left in the second period to put his team within two of UConn. The scoring numbers reversed in the final period of regulation, as the Lakers tallied three to the Huskies’ one. UConn’s lone tally in the period was by freshman Brian Burns (Binghamton, NY) with his second of the season.
In overtime, UConn goaltender Scott Tomes (Windham, MA), made a tough penalty-shot save early in the period, but with just 56 seconds remaining, Mercyhurst’s Rich Hansen sent a shot Tomes’ way which looked to be saved but later ruled to be over the line. Tomes finished the game with 32 saves while Jordan Wakefield and Andy Franck split time in net for the Lakers and made 23 and 17 saves, respectively.
UConn returns to the ice on Friday, November 14 when they travel to AHA opponent American International for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
