Kristen Graczyk Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year
Somerset, NJ (November 6) -- After winning its fifth BIG EAST Northeast Division Title in as many years, four members of the University of Connecticut women's soccer team were honored at the annual BIG EAST women's soccer championship banquet Thursday evening in Somerset, NJ.
Junior forward Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year after registering 14 goals and 37 points in 2003. Graczyk was especially effective in league play, leading the conference in goals (9), points (24), assists (6), and game-winners (4). Graczyk is the first Husky to win the prestigious accolade since Kerry Connors in 1996.
Freshman standout Meghan Schnur (Butler, PA) shared BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors with Notre Dame's Christie Shaner. Schnur scored four goals and added eight assists in 2003 and was second to Graczyk in assists in league play with five. Schnur is only the second Husky to win Rookie of the Year Honors; Mary-Frances Monroe earned the award in 1998.
Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta) earned mention on the All-BIG EAST Second Team thanks to her 12 goals and 27 points in 2003. Nikki Cross (Pembroke, MA) earned mention on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team as she was the linchpin of a UConn defense that held opponents to less than one goal per game.
The Huskies will await their fate from the NCAA Selection Committee. Pairings for the 2003 NCAA Women's Soccer College Cup will be announced Monday November 10 at 4:00 p.m. The selection show can be viewed live on ESPN News.
