NEW HAVEN, CT (Nov. 5) - For the second time this season, the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (16-12) swept in-state rival Yale by a score of 3-0. Jamie Hadenfeldt’s (Benicia, CA) numbers will continue to move her up on the UConn all-time record lists, as she recorded a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs in the contest. The Huskies defeated the Bulldogs (12-8) by scores of 30-26, 30-17, 30-21.
Sophomore Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) also tallied double-figure kills for UConn with 10, and senior setter Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) dished out a match-high 39 assists. Erbez also knocked down eight kills on 14 attempts with just one error for a match-high hitting percentage of .500. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) was a weapon on defense, recording 12 digs to tie for the team-high with Hadenfeldt.
The first game was the closest of the three as the two teams each registered 17 kills, but Yale errors near the end of the game gave the Huskies the edge. The second game was dominated by UConn, who out-killed the Bulldogs 20 to seven, recording a hitting percentage of .375 to Yale’s .103. The Huskies built an early lead in the game which grew throughout, and they ended strong with kills on five of the final six points. Crawley and Brittany Conover (Bargersville, IN) knocked down five and four kills, respectively, with no errors in the game.
Game three proved to be a struggle for both teams in hitting accuracy, but despite recording half their match errors in the third game alone, UConn held onto their offensive edge with 15 kills to Yale’s 10, and were able to close out the game and the match with a victory.
The Bulldogs were led by on offense by Renee Lopes with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage, and on defense by Jessica Kronstadt with 15 digs.
The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9 when they host BIG EAST rival Boston College at 2:00 p.m. The game will feature UConn’s three seniors, who will be playing in their final home match and will be honored in the Hartford Courant/CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute.
