South Orange, NJ (Nov. 2) - After a convincing 30-15 game one victory, the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team was defeated by Seton Hall in the following three games to lose the BIG EAST match-up by scores of 15-30, 30-24, 30-28, 30-28. The loss drops the Huskies to 15-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while the Pirates move to 19-10 overall, and pick up their second BIG EAST win for a 2-7 record.
Three players racked up double-figure kills for Seton Hall, led by Jenna Meyers and Katherine Whitney with 15 kills apiece. Both girls made it a double-double with 12 and 13 digs, respectively. Jessica Harrington notched 14 kills for the Pirates, and also recorded a team-high hitting percentage of .367.
The Huskies could do no wrong in game one, accumlating 14 points before the Pirates scored their first. UConn’s Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) notched six kills with no errors in the game, as the Huskies dominated with a team hitting percentage of .440 to Seton Hall’s -.029.
The Pirates played like a new team for the rest of match, most notably in game two as they recorded seven more kills and five less errors as a team than in the first game. Harrington paced Seton Hall with five kills and zero errors as they rolled to a 30-24 victory in the game, and Whitney also notched five kills along with three service aces.
The teams were neck-and-neck in the final two games, but it was the Pirates who were able to consistently maintain a small lead over the Huskies. UConn came as close as 29-28 in game four after a kill by Hadenfeldt ruined a game-point chance for Seton Hall, but Meyers put down the next ball to seal the match victory for the Pirates.
Hadenfeldt led UConn with 22 kills and 10 digs in the match, and Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, MD) chipped in 17 kills. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) recorded a match-high 22 digs, and setter Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) dished out 48 assists while also tallying 12 digs and seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
The Huskies will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 5 when they travel to Yale for a non-conference match-up at 7:00 p.m.
