NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (Oct. 31) - Junior Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) registered her 17th double-double of the season with a match-high 20 kills and a match-high 14 digs to lead the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (15-11, 3-5) in a clean, three-game sweep of Rutgers (9-15, 3-5) in College Avenue Gym. The Huskies defeated the Scarlet Knights by scores of 30-23, 30-27, 30-26.
Consistent play through three games was the key to success for UConn, who finished off the match with one of their strongest single-game performances of the year with 21 team kills and just three errors in 35 attempts for a percentage of .514. The Huskies were challenged on the scoreboard by the Scarlet Knights, most notably in games two and three, but were able to keep their rhythm strong to the end and finish each game with a "W."
After a solid seven-point victory in the first game, UConn found themselves tied at 27-27 with Rutgers in game two, but timely kills by sophomore Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, MD) and freshman Alanna Castle (Las Vegas, NV) with the game-winner, were enough to put the Huskies up for good. Ashley had an especially strong second game, finishing with six kills on seven attempts with no errors.
UConn held a more solid lead at the end of game three, thanks to Hadenfeldt who hit an impressive nine kills on ten attempts with no errors, and recorded two kills in the final four points of the match including the game-winner.
Ashley finished the match with 12 kills for UConn, and Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) was strong on defense with 12 digs. Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) dished out the assists for the Huskies and tallied a match-high 44.
Rutgers was led by Shayla Bush with 17 kills and 13 digs, and also recording double-figures in kills was Dawn Christjaener with 10.
The Huskies will look for BIG EAST win number four on Sunday, November 2 when they travel to Seton Hall for a 2:00 p.m. match-up.
