UConn Falls to Virginia Tech in Five

STORRS, CT (Oct. 26) - The Huskies and the Hokies traded the first four games, but Virginia Tech (10-12, 4-3) was the winner of game five to take the match victory over the University of Connecticut volleyball team (14-11, 2-5). The Hokies won by scores of 24-30, 31-29, 25-30, 30-18, 15-10.
Five players recorded double-figure kills for Virginia Tech, led by Annie Spicer with a double-double of 24 kills and 18 digs. Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) led the Huskies with 23 kills and 19 digs, and Brittany Conover (Bargersville, IN) notched a career-high 20 kills with an impressive match-high hitting percentage of .441.
Hadenfeldt stole the show in game one with eight kills as UConn hit .333 as a team to Virginia Tech’s hitting percentage of .200. Neither team ever took a strong lead in the second game, but it was the Huskies who held the slim lead down the stretch until the Hokies tied it up at 29-29. From there, two errors on UConn allowed Virginia Tech to take the game and tie the match at 1-1.
UConn got back on track for game three, led by Conover who knocked down eight kills on 10 attempts with no errors in the game. The Hokies dominated in the fourth game, out-hitting the Huskies .359 to .022, and held the lead throughout. Virginia Tech’s Annie Spicer and Allie Kupec combined for 11 kills, which matched UConn’s total team kills for the game while the Hokies had 18 as a team.
Virginia Tech kept the momentum going in game five with their best team performance of the match, tallying 13 kills and just one error while the Huskies managed just seven kills and committed two errors. Spicer paced her team with five kills as the Hokies’ lead grew throughout the game.
Katie Esbrook notched a double-double for VT with 18 kills and 11 digs, as did Colette Ramirez with 13 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Bayer led the team on defense with 19 digs.
Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) and Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, MD) each recorded double-figure kills for UConn with 14 and 11, respectively, and Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) led all players in the match with 24 digs.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31 when they travel to Rutgers for a BIG EAST match-up at 7:00 p.m.
