West Hartford, CT (October 12) -- Hartford forward Stephanie Pothier scored the game’s only goal at the 92:58 mark, as the University of Hartford upset the No. 10 University of Connecticut women’s soccer team 1-0 at Al-Marzook Field in West Hartford, CT. With the loss, UConn slips to 7-3-3 on the campaign, while Hartford improves to 3-8-0.
Christina Saropoulos served the ball into the box from about 30 yards out on the right-hand side. The ball took a wicked bounce past the UConn back-line and found its way to Pothier who was all-alone in front of the net. Pothier fired the ball into the back of the net, beating UConn keeper Erin Rice (Keller, TX) 2:58 into the first overtime session. The upset was Hartford’s first victory over UConn since 1997.
UConn totally dominated this game and had multiple chances to bury the Hawks. The Huskies out shot Hartford by an obscene 31-to-7 margin and a 16-to-3 shots on goal margin. Heather Hinton was magnificent in net for Hartford, turning back everything the Huskies could muster and making several acrobatic saves en route to earning the shutout. Rice made two saves for the Huskies.
The Huskies hit the post three times, the most dramatic with five minutes remaining in regulation. Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) fed Brittany Barakat (Arlington, TX) with a back-pass finding Barakat wide-open from about 15 yards out. Barakat wound up and fired a shot that skinned the crossbar and preserved the scoreless tie. About ten minutes earlier, Graczyk was unguarded from about 12 yards away and controlled a rebound. Graczyk rifled a shot that looked at the post as it went by, ending up out of bounds.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, October 15 in the first game of a men’s and women’s soccer double-header. The women kick off at 5:00 p.m. and the men are scheduled to take the field at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be televised by Charter Communications.
