Huskies Fall to Florida, 3-2, in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, FL (Sept. 6) – The University of Connecticut fell behind quickly in the first half, being shut out 3-0. Despite a quick start in the second, the Huskies were unable to turn the game around and fell to the Gators 3-2 behind a Florida crowd of 2089.
The Gators scored three goals in the first half, beating Maria Yatrakis (Brooklyn, NY) more times than the two previous Husky opponents were able to. Danielle Murphy scored on a free kick after a foul by Sarah Popper (Penn Yan, NY). The ball sailed over the head of Yatrakis and hit the crossbar before crossing the goal line. The second goal came from Cristal Frimpong, who shot left past Yatrakis. Megan McMillan rounded out the half with a breakaway goal. The Huskies has some scoring chances, out-shooting the Gators 5-3, but were unable to produce a goal.
Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) broke through for Connecticut three minutes into the second half on a pass from Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, WA) in front of the Gator net. Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, VT) added an unassisted tally to bring the Huskies within one, but were unable to tie for an overtime period.
UConn now holds a 2-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST record as the Gators improve 1-2-0, 0-0-0 SEC. The Huskies continue their roadtrip on Sunday, September 8 when they travel to Athens, GA to face the University of Georgia Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Connecticut returns home on Wednesday, September 11 to host Villanova at 3 p.m.
