VILLANOVA, PA (April 12) – The University of Connecticut baseball team played only one game of its scheduled doubleheader against Villanova on Friday afternoon, falling 8-3 to the Wildcats in a nine-inning affair at Richie Ashburn Field.
The teams canceled the day’s second game after a rain delay bumped back the start time of the first game. UConn fell to 15-12-0 overall and 7-4-0 in the BIG EAST while Villanova improved to 19-14-0 and 4-7-0 in the conference.
The Wildcats took an early lead after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, both unearned. Villanova built its lead to 4-0 in the third and added another run in the fourth when Greg Pater stole home on a double steal. Junior left-hander Jesse Carlson (Kensington, CT) worked 5.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out and walking six. His record dropped to 5-2 on the season.
The Huskies got back in the game in the sixth with a three-run inning. Senior Jon Gorrie (Northboro, MA) led off the frame with a single to left and promptly stole second for his team-best 12th steal of the season. Senior Cy Hess (Oakdale, CT) moved Gorrie to third with a single through the left side of the infield, and junior Brett Burnham (South Windsor, CT) brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center. Hess then scored on a single to right by junior Peter Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA), who later scored UConn’s third run on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT).
After UConn cut Villanova’s lead to 5-3, the Wildcats responded in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of runs and went on to add another in the eighth. Starter Tom Kandybowicz lasted 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits while striking out and walking two. Closer James Russell didn’t allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work while picking up his 10th save of the season.
Connecticut will next travel to Rutgers for a BIG EAST doubleheader on Sunday, April 14. The first game of the series is scheduled to begin at noon.
