STORRS, CT (Dec. 1) – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team picked up one point in Hockey East play with a pair of power-play goals as they tied Providence College, 2-2, on Sunday at the UConn Ice Arena. The Friars, formerly tied for first in Hockey East, now stands at 8-3-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the league. The Huskies are now 6-7-2, 1-1-1 HE.
The Huskies pulled ahead of the Friars, who are tied for first place in Hockey East, at the 7:44 mark of the first period. On the power play, Jacquelyn McGuire (Glenview, IL) skated from one side of the offensive zone to the other, finding Megan McLeod (Livonia, MI) waiting in front of the net. McLeod received the pass and took a backhanded shot to put the Huskies on the board, scoring the only goal of the first period.
It took the Friars a while to answer back, but they tied the game with just 2:10 left on the clock in the second frame. Kelli Halcisak skated the puck up-ice and passed it off to Ashley Payton, who was waiting just outside the crease to even the score at 1-1.
Both teams added one more in the third period, as the Huskies capitalized on a misplayed puck by Providence goalie Amy Quinlan, putting UConn on top once more. The Friars evened it up again, just 25 seconds later, at 1:14 into the third. Meredith Roth placed the puck top shelf past Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI), and the score held at 2-2 through the third and a period of overtime.
Quinlan stopped 21 shots, as Murphy denied 45 for the Huskies and was named First Star of the Game for her efforts. UConn’s McGuire was the second star and Providence’s Roth was the third.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, December 7, when they travel to meet Hockey East rival New Hampshire at 2 p.m. They return home the following day when they host UNH at 2 p.m.
