STORRS, CONNECTICUT (September 17, 2001)—The University of Connecticut’s 2001-2002 men’s basketball schedule includes 27 regular season games, highlighted by early-season competition in the BB&T Classic at MCI Center in Washington, D.C., intersectional non-league matchups against Arizona, North Carolina and Oklahoma, and a 16-game BIG EAST Conference schedule. In addition, the Huskies will be featured on national television a total of ten times during regular season play.
Connecticut will play 15 regular season home games, nine in the Hartford Civic Center and six in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. In addition to the regular season home games, the Huskies will play two pre-season exhibition home games, one in Hartford and one in Storrs.
UConn’s ten regular season games on national television include six contests on ESPN, two games scheduled for broadcast on CBS and two on ESPN2. All UConn games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the UConn/WTIC Radio Network with WTIC AM-1080 serving as the flagship station. Local television plans will be announced at a later date.
UConn led by 16th year head coach Jim Calhoun, will play 12 regular season games “away from home”. The Huskies will play eight BIG EAST Conference road games as well as traveling for road games at Arizona and Massachusetts (U Game). In addition, Connecticut will be involved in two neutral site matchups during the playing of the four-team BB&T Classic at the MCI Center in Washington, DC (December 2-3).
“Our 2001-2002 UConn men’s basketball schedule will be one of the most demanding in school history,” said UConn Director of Athletics Lew Perkins. We have several outstanding non-conference games against nationally-ranked teams like Arizona, North Carolina and Oklahoma and we’ll also play in the BB&T Classic as well as visiting Massachusetts for the U Game. Our 17-contest home schedule will include an outstanding balance of games, at both the Hartford Civic Center and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.”
Connecticut’s 16-game BIG EAST Conference schedule will mark the second year the league will play in two seven-team divisions. UConn will face six league opponents home and away in 2001-2002 (Boston College, Miami, Providence College, St. John’s, Villanova, Virginia Tech). Connecticut will also play single games against four other BIG EAST opponents, hosting West Virginia and Seton Hall and playing on the road at Georgetown and Rutgers. During the 2001-2002 regular season, UConn will not play any games against BIG EAST rivals Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
UConn’s 2001-2002 regular season schedule will be launched on Monday, November 19, when the Huskies host Vanderbilt at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT. Prior to the regular season, UConn will play two exhibition games against opponents to be determined—on November 6 at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and on November 13 at the Hartford Civic Center.
The 16-game BIG EAST schedule for Connecticut begins on January 2 when Connecticut visits divisional opponent Virginia Tech. Beginning with that game, 16 of UConn’s last 19 regular season games will be conference contests. The three non-league battles will all take place during a demanding 20-day period in January when the Huskies face three nationally-recognized programs—Oklahoma in Hartford on January 7, North Carolina in Gampel Pavilion on January 19, and at Arizona on January 26.
UConn’s ten-contest Hartford Civic Center home schedule includes four BIG EAST games, five non-league contests, and a preseason exhibition. Connecticut’s seven-contest Harry A. Gampel Pavilion schedule includes five BIG EAST games, two non-league contests and a preseason exhibition.
“We are very excited about the challenges which lie ahead during our 2001-2002 regular season,” said UConn head coach Jim Calhoun. “Our non-conference schedule is obviously very demanding, both during the November-December portion of the schedule as well as the three-week stretch in January when we play Oklahoma, North Carolina and Arizona. Within the BIG EAST Conference, we expect to challenge for another championship, hopefully improving throughout the regular season and positioning Connecticut Basketball for another run deep into national post-season play.”
