Huskies Edge Sacred Heart With 10-8 Win

Storrs, CT - Falling into line with the last four contests, the University of Connecticut's baseball game Wednesday was right on track as the Huskies edged Sacred Heart, 10-8, at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, CT. With the victory, UConn improved to 24- 22, with each of the last five outings being decided by two runs or less. Sacred Heart, which was swept by the Huskies this season as Connecticut handed the Pioneers a 12-4 loss on March 15, fell to 19-21. Connecticut also remained perfect this year against in state schools with a 6-0 record as the squad is batting .391 against those teams.
Sacred Heart got going early as it jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the damage was minimal as the Pioneers left three of 12 runners on the day on during that frame. However, in the third UConn got the lead and never looked back with the Huskies bringing in four. With two on, Mike Scott (Jr., Darien, CT) singled in Mike Mocerino (Fr., Northboro, MA) as Scott would end up going 3-for-5 with a team- leading four RBI. With the trio of hits, Scott now has 73 on the year, putting him in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time single season hitting list and within reach of the record of 82 held by Billy Rich in the 1997 season. Brian Tisbert (Sr., Andover, MA), who also went 3-for-5, sent his 11th double of the season into left center to score Scott and Mike Leonard (Fr., Vernon, CT) as he was the next batter at the plate. With 44 doubles, Tisbert stands in third place on the school's career chart. When Cy Hess (Jr., Oakdale, CT) singled into right, he brought Tisbert around to cap the scoring.
Connecticut seemed to have the game in hand as it took a 9-4 lead into the top of the eighth before Brian Rojee and Brian Bruckhorst came up with back-to-back two RBI doubles to slice the lead to 9- 8. The Huskies got some insurance during its portion of the eighth when Tisbert singled down the left field line to plate Leonard and bring the score to 10- 8.
For Connecticut, Eric Drown (So., Ipswich, MA) picked up his second win of the season with both coming against Sacred Heart. Drown went seven and one third, allowing 10 hits, eight runs (six earned), while walking four and striking out one. Mike Mocerino (Fr., Northboro, MA) came on in relief in the eighth to earn his first career save as he went the last one and two thirds giving up two hits and no runs. Sacred Heart's Lee Natsu was credited with the loss to even his record at 2-2. Natsu worked seven, with UConn lighting him up for 13 hits and 10 runs (seven earned).
The Huskies look to remain perfect against in state opponents as the team travels to New Britain, CT, Thursday to face Central Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m. This game will be UConn's last before heading into its final regular season BIG EAST series against Notre Dame May 5-6 in South Bend, IN. The Irish check in as the number one team in the nation in both the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls this week and are second behind Louisiana State in the USA Today rankings.
