Huskies Ousted From BIG EAST Championship by Notre Dame

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 17, 2001) – Behind a match-high 13 kills from Marcie Bomhack, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish ousted the University of Connecticut volleyball team from the BIG EAST Championship for the fourth consecutive season. With the 3-0 victory, Notre Dame is 20-5 this season while UConn falls to 21-7.
The Huskies struggled with .095 hitting percentage in game one, as the Irish took the set, 30-20. UConn’s offense came out stronger in the second game, battling Notre Dame point for point as neither team could establish an advantage of more than two points. Connecticut finally took a 21-17 advantage, but the Irish stormed back to cut the lead to 21-20. Notre Dame tied up the set at 24-24 and took the lead with a 27-26 score. Notre Dame closed out the game with a 3-2 run to claim the 30-28 victory.
Junior Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA), a 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, had five kills for the Huskies in the second game en route to a team-leading 12 for the match.
Notre Dame stormed to a 14-6 lead to open the third set before UConn came back to cut the lead to 15-14. However, the Irish regrouped to claim the match, 30-27.
Junior Christine Lambert (Lancaster, CA) added seven kills and six blocks for the Huskies while senior Maria Shaker (Fairview Park, OH) posted 25 assists and eight digs.
For the Irish, 2001 BIG EAST Player of the Year Malinda Goralski also had double-digit kills with 12. Setter Kristen Kinder recorded 42 assists and nine digs.
Notre Dame moves to play the winner of the Rutgers-Georgetown match for the BIG EAST Championship Sunday afternoon.
