STORRS, CT (October 24) – University of Connecticut women’s soccer team member Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on Wednesday by Soccer America Magazine.
Zimny, who was named BIG EAST Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year over the summer, anchored the UConn defense that allowed only one goal over the weekend. She was a major factor in the win over the Irish, disrupting runs and clearing passes out of the box in 90 minutes of action. The senior also scored UConn’s first goal of the game on a free kick from 18 yards out, her first tally of the season and first since November 20, 1999.
The honor, which is awarded each week to only 11 players across the country, was the second in as many weeks for the UConn women’s soccer team this season. Freshman Zahra Jalalian was the first Husky recipient of the season when she was named to the team last week.
Zimny was also named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. She has started every game this season and has helped the Huskies post eight shutouts and limit opponents to 0.75 goals a game.
Other members of the Soccer America Team of the Week include: Julie Podhrasky, GK, Massachusetts; A.B. Robbins, D, Wake Forest; Danielle Slaton, D, Santa Clara; Erika Webster, D, George Mason; Ryan Lee, M, Baylor; Aly Wagner, M, Santa Clara; Lindsay Gusick, F, Virginia; Linsey Johnson, F, Texas A&M; Christine Latham, F, Nebraska; Kim Patrick, F, Tennessee.
The No. 9 Connecticut women’s soccer team will host No. 18 Harvard tonight at 7 p.m. at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies (12-4-0) will then have four days to prepare for Dartmouth on Monday, October 29 in Hanover, NH.
