STORRS, CT (October 2) – The No. 9 University of Connecticut women’s soccer team had its five-game win streak snapped by No. 13 Florida tonight, 2-1, at Morrone Stadium.
Gators’ senior and leading scorer Abby Wambach netted the game winner at 65:57 to improve Florida to 6-2-1 overall. The Huskies dropped to 7-3-0 overall and are 3-2-0 this season against ranked opponents.
UConn got on the board first after pressuring Florida defender Keisha Bell to play a ball back to her keeper. Bell’s pass slid past goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren and rolled into the left corner of the net at 13:46 to give the Huskies the early 1-0 advantage.
The Gators wasted little time tying things up, as forward Andi Sellers took a pass at the top of the UConn box and blasted a shot to the left side of the net at 23:58. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Rice (Keller, TX) dove and got her fingertips on the ball, but the force of the shot carried it to the back of the net. Christine Johnson was credited with an assist on the play.
After going into the half tied at 1-1, Florida put in the go-ahead goal at 65:57 when midfielder Danielle Murphy served a ball into the box from the right sideline. Wambach, Florida’s all-time leader in goals, headed the ball past Rice for her seventh score of the season.
Florida outshot UConn by a 14-11 margin, though the Huskies earned four corner kicks to the Gators’ three. Both Rice and Kellgren finished with seven saves apiece.
Connecticut will look to rebound against No. 19 Syracuse in a BIG EAST Northeast Division match-up on Friday, Oct. 5 at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Huskies enter the game 4-0-0 in the conference, while the Orangewomen are 6-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the BIG EAST.
