STORRS, CT (October 17) – University of Connecticut women’s soccer team member Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, WA) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on Wednesday by Soccer America Magazine.
Jalalian, a freshman forward who prior to last weekend had played in seven games and recorded one shot, notched both of UConn’s game-winning goals last weekend in 1-0 wins over No. 21 West Virginia and William & Mary. Her goal against the Mountaineers on Oct. 12 was the first of her collegiate career and came six minutes after entering the game as a substitute. Against William & Mary on Oct. 14, Jalalian netted the game winner 35 seconds into overtime to improve the Huskies to 10-4-0 overall on the season.
The honor, which is awarded each week to only 11 players across the country, was the first for the UConn women’s soccer team this season. Jalalian was also named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week by the conference on Monday.
Other members of the Soccer America Team of the Week include: Ruth Montgomery, GK, St. Mary’s; Liza Barber, D, Harvard; Jamie Norwood, D, Denver; Catherine Reddick, D, North Carolina; Keeley Dowling, MF, Tennessee; Brittany Kirk, MF, California; Kathleen Machamer, MF, Massachusetts; Leslie Osborne, F, Santa Clara; Abby Wambach, F, Florida; and Kelly Wilson, F, Texas.
The Connecticut women’s soccer team will be back in action on Friday, October 19 at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies, who have already clinched the BIG EAST Northeast Division title with a 5-1-0 conference record, will host BIG EAST opponent Pittsburgh (6-6-1 overall). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
