Storrs, CT (October 1) – University of Connecticut women’s soccer team members Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) and Abby Shepherd (Milford, MI) were named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Borisjuk, a senior forward and tri-captain, recorded two goals and a pair of assists last week as the Huskies went 2-0 in BIG EAST play. She notched two goals against No. 17 Miami in the Huskies’ 5-0 rout on Sept. 28 and also had an assist. She followed up that performance by assisting on the game-winning goal in Sunday’s 2-1 overtime win over Providence. Borisjuk leads the team in assists with five and is second on the team in scoring with 11 points. She shares the award with Notre Dame's Mia Sarkesian.
Shepherd, a freshman midfielder from Milford High School, also scored a pair of goals last week. She netted her first collegiate goal in the Miami game and tallied the equalizer against Providence that sent the game into overtime. Shepherd has started in all nine games for the Huskies and has recorded two goals and two assists for six points, placing her fourth on the team in scoring.
The Connecticut women’s soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, October 2 at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies, who stand 7-2-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the BIG EAST, will take a break from their conference schedule with a game against nationally-ranked Florida. The match, originally scheduled for Sept. 14 but postponed due to the national tragedy, kicks off at 7 p.m.
