STORRS, CT (Dec. 30, 2000) -- Wayne States Maxim Starchenko scored the game-winner in the sudden death overtime period to lift the Warriors past the University of Connecticut mens ice hockey team on Saturday evening in the Championship game of the 2000 SNET UConn Classic in Storrs. UConn falls to 6-9-1 overall, while Wayne State captured the tournament title raising its record to 11-8-1 overall.
Jarrett Gibbons put Wayne State on the board at the 7:51 mark of the first period. UConns Anthony Switek (Philadelphia, PA) made a pass to Eric Goclowski (Hamden, CT) who then flicked the puck over Wayne State goaltender Marc Carlsons shoulder for the goal. Brent Refrew gave the Warriors the 2-1 lead with 54 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Michael Goldkind (Silver Springs, MD) evened the score just two minutes into the second period on assists from Matt Herhal (Pottstown, PA) and Charles Ridolf (West Warwick, RI). At the 7:40 mark, Connecticut took the lead on a shot by Ciro Longobardi (Wallingford, CT) with an assist from Bret Bostock (Phoenix, AZ). With just under a minute left in the period Starchenko nailed a shot through UConn goaltender Jason Careys (Oakdale, MN) legs to tie the score at three apiece.
UConn took the lead again on a cross-ice pass from Ridolf to Goldkind who then crossed the puck in front of the net to Herhal for the goal at the 11:27 mark of the third period. Nick Shrader evened the score again with under a minute left in the period to send the game into the overtime period. Using the tournament overtime format of a 20-minute sudden death period, Starchenkos goal came at the 19:35 mark of the fourth stanza. Four of Wayne States five goals came in the last minute of play in each of the games four periods.
Carey earned the loss in net making a career-high 39 saves in goal, while Marc Carlson stopped 21 UConn shots. The Warriors outshot the Huskies, 44-25.
In the consolation game played earlier in the evening, Queens University defeated Holy Cross, 3-1. The 2000 SNET UConn Classic All-Tournament team featured from Connecticut defenseman Scott Brown (Blaine, MN) and Longobardi, while Wayne States Starchenko, Gibbons, defenseman Tyler Kindle and Carlson were also named to the team. Starchenko was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player for his two goals in tonights game.
UConn will travel to Colorado Springs, CO for a pair of weekend games on January 5 & 6 against Air Force in games slated to begin at 9:05 p.m. EST.
