Robert Weiner joins the Huskies as associate head coach and will work with the quarterbacks after six seasons on Jason Candle's staff at Toledo.
Weiner served as the Rockets' interim head coach for the 2025 Boca Raton Bowl of Beans. He spent six seasons as Toledo's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, beginning in 2020, and earned a reputation as one of the top developers of young quarterbacks in the country.
Weiner coached Tucker Gleason to third-team All-MAC honors in 2025, as Gleason completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,515 yards and a MAC-leading 21 touchdowns. Gleason had first emerged as Toledo's starter in 2024, throwing for 2,808 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading the Rockets to an 8-5 record and a win over Pittsburgh in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. Under Weiner's direction, Gleason set a career-high 336 passing yards in that six-overtime bowl win. Weiner had also coached Gleason in high school at Tampa Plant from 2018-19.
Before Gleason, Weiner helped develop Dequan Finn into one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the MAC. Finn took over as Toledo's starter midway through the 2021 season and went on to earn second-team All-MAC honors in 2022, leading the Rockets to a MAC Championship Game victory and a win over Liberty in the Boca Raton Bowl, where he was named Offensive MVP of both games. Finn was even better in 2023, earning first-team All-MAC honors and the Vern Smith Award as the league's MVP after leading the MAC in passing efficiency (151.04), passing yards (2,657), touchdown passes (22) and total offense (247.7). He finished his Toledo career ranked among the program's all-time leaders in passing and rushing yards by a quarterback.
In 2020, Weiner guided quarterbacks Eli Peters and Carter Bradley to notable improvement, with Peters raising his completion percentage nearly 10 points from the previous season and Bradley stepping in after an injury to finish third in the MAC in passing efficiency.
Weiner was also regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, ranking as the No. 4 recruiter in the MAC for the 2022 class, according to 247Sports.
Weiner came to Toledo after 16 seasons as head coach at Plant High School in Tampa, Florida, where he won four state championships, added two runner-up finishes and captured 14 consecutive district titles (2005-2018). Weiner and former Toledo quarterback Phillip Ely combined to win two of those state titles, in 2008 and 2009. He compiled a 172-37-1 record at Plant, went 42-10 in the playoffs, and was twice named the Florida Dairy Farmers' All-Classifications High School Football Coach of the Year (2006 and 2008) — one of only two coaches in state history to win the award multiple times. Other notable quarterbacks who came through Weiner's program at Plant include Aaron Murray (Georgia), Robert Marve (Miami, Purdue) and Jordan McCloud (South Florida, Arizona).
Weiner began his coaching career at his alma mater, Tampa Jesuit High School, where he was an assistant in football, basketball and baseball from 1989-2003. He then served as head baseball coach at Crystal River High School from 2003-04 before taking the head football job at Plant in 2004.
Weiner earned his bachelor's degree in English and secondary education from Boston College in 1987.
