WSOC Draw in BIG EAST Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The UConn women's soccer team (2-2-5, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) played its second-straight 0-0 draw against St. John's (3-5-2, 0-1-1 BIG EAST)ย on Wednesday evening at Belson Stadium.
The majority of the action occurred in the first 45 minutes of play with the Huskies out shooting the Johnnies 10-2 in the half with a couple quality scoring chances.ย
Tiana Righetti created the first UConn scoring chance just over 20 minutes in the half with a turnaround shot from a tough angle that banged off the crossbar.ย
Moments later, Ines Nourani won a fifty-fifty ball along the sidelines and stormed up the field, the Boischatel, Quebec native fired a shot at a tough angle that was saved by the St. John's keeper.
Maree-Anne Van Doesburg had the best scoring chance of the night for the Huskies on a free kick attempt from just outside the box. The sophomore drilled her shot to the upper right corner of the goal but the goalie was able to make a leaping save with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.ย
From there, the game didn't contain many scoring chances with the Huskies not having a shot until under 10 minutes left in regulation. Olviia Beauvois created a nice give a go with just over five minutes left that led to her shot just wide of goal.
The final chance of the night came courtesy Anaya Johnson who had a header attempt that was saved with just over a mintue to go.
Ava Yamas secured her second-straight shutout by making one save on the night.ย
Next up, the Huskies will host Providence in its BIG EAST home opener on Saturday, October 3 at 6:30 p.m.
