STORRS, Conn. — UConn field hockey defeated no.14 Liberty 3-2 on Friday to improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. After Liberty scored in the first quarter, the Huskies scored twice in the second quarter and once in the third quarter, putting five of their eight shots on goal.

UConn and Liberty each finished with eight shots, with the Huskies putting five on goal compared with four for Liberty. Lucy Zich finished with two goals, the game-winning goal, five shots and three shots on goal, while Natalie Mckenna made two saves in the cage.

The Huskies faced an early deficit after Liberty's Alexia Guedouar scored at 5:35 for a 1-0 lead. UConn generated its best response late in the first quarter, earning a penalty corner from Milou Heuker before Zich had a shot turned away by a defensive save and Faith Everett put a shot on goal. Natalie Mckenna added a save in the final minute, and the Huskies finished the quarter down 1-0.

UConn moved in front in the second quarter after Lene Reiche tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke at 19:36 and Zich scored from Olivia McKenna at 26:26 for a 2-1 lead. Natalie Mckenna also stopped Paris-Gail Isaacs after an early Liberty penalty corner, and the Huskies carried the 2-1 advantage into halftime.

A string of penalty corners turned into the third quarter's only goal, with Zich scoring at 36:37 off assists from Heuker and Charlotte Ritter for a 3-1 advantage. UConn earned four penalty corners in a 27-second span and had two blocked shots before the goal. Liberty's lone recorded shot of the quarter went wide after a penalty corner, and the Huskies carried the 3-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

UConn held on in the fourth quarter after Liberty's Paris-Gail Isaacs scored off a Mia Santana assist at 59:20 to make it 3-2. Earlier, the Huskies earned two penalty corners through Heuker, and Zich put a shot wide after the second one. UConn saw out the final seconds to finish a 3-2 win.

Zich scored twice, put three of her team-high five shots on goal and recorded the game-winning goal. Reiche converted her lone penalty-stroke attempt for a goal. Natalie Mckenna played all 60 minutes in goal and made two saves.
