UConn Drops Four-Set Battle to Coppin State

STORRS, Conn. - UConn fell to Coppin State, 3-1, Friday night at the UConn Volleyball Center in the opening match of the "For the White & Blue" Tournament.
After falling behind 17-11 in the first set, UConn won seven of the next eight rallies to tie the set at 18-18 before moving ahead 20-19. After Coppin St. got back within 24-23, Sydney Borowy finished the set with a kill from Isabella Sohl to give UConn a 25-23 win.
In the second set, UConn erased a 21-16 deficit with seven straight points to move ahead 23-21. Hazuna Akishige served through the late run, which included kills from Borowy and Jordyn Hughes and a block by Audrey Jensen. Coppin St. answered with the final four points to take the set 25-23.
Helena Einarsdottir supplied four kills as UConn tried to answer in the third set, with Courtney Grayson, Borowy and Maja Daca also putting away points. Coppin St. kept the pressure on late and took the set 25-12.
UConn battled back after Coppin St. broke a 6-6 tie with six straight points to take a 12-6 lead. The Huskies responded with kills from Einarsdottir, Daca, Hughes and Grayson, including a late three-point run to cut the deficit to 23-17, but Coppin St. closed out the fourth set, 25-18.
Einarsdottir led the Huskies with 13 kills, followed by Daca with 10 and Borowy with nine. Maggie Carley and Borowy each recorded one service ace, while Grayson led UConn at the net with five blocks. Hughes added three blocks and Audrey Jensen contributed two. Isabella Sohl paced the Huskies with 31 assists, while Jensen added nine. Hazuna Akishige led UConn defensively with 13 digs, followed by Daca with seven and Einarsdottir with six.
UP NEXT: The Huskies are back on the court tomorrow at noon to take on Merrimack.
