Braylon Mullins Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

NEW YORK  - UConn men's basketball guard Braylon Mullins has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday (Feb. 23). It is the third weekly rookie accolade from the league for Mullins this season and the fourth certificate received by a Husky.Â
In two games last week Mullins averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three. He added an assist, a block and two steals on the week while playing 28.0 minutes per game in a setback to Creighton and win at Villanova.Â
Mullins started the week with a flourish on Feb. 18 against Creighton. The league's Preseason Freshman of the Year scored a career-high 25 points in 31 minutes and grabbed six rebounds, shooting 9-of-22 from the field and hitting on 6-of-11 from 3-point range. It was the second time this season in which Mullins has connected on six triples, the first such instances for a Connecticut rookie since 2007.Â
The 6'6 Indianan followed that with an efficient 10 points in the decisive road victory at Villanova on Saturday. He hit on 4-of-7 from the field and 2-of-5 from 3-point range in 25 minutes of action, adding three rebounds and an assist.Â
This season Mullins is averaging 12.3 points on a 45.7/38.6/84.2 shooting line with 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. In conference action his numbers spike to 13.4 points per game on 40.5 percent shooting from 3-point range. He has hit 45 triples over his first 16 career BIG EAST games, most ever for a UConn rookie.Â
