Coach Gbandi Postgame Interview
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team shutout the Providence Friars, 2-0 on Saturday at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The Huskies earned three crucial BIG EAST points, improving to 3-2 in conference play and 7-6-2 overall this season.
Junior forward Alfonso Arredondo gave UConn an early lead, scoring his first goal of the season in the 9th minute to make it 1-0.
Just four minutes later after opening the scoring, Arredondo found the back of the net again, recording his first career brace, giving the Huskies a commanding 2-0 lead early on.
Providence tested UConn goalkeeper Kyle Durham, forcing the redshirt-junior to make four saves in the first half. UConn pushed for more midway through the first half with Maxim Emmerling and Elijah Langford putting shots on goal to force saves from Providence goalkeeper Valentin Kneis.
The Huskies maintained their 2-0 advantage heading into the halftime break, despite the Friars holding a narrow 8-7 edge in shots.
Providence tested UConn immediately after halftime, forcing Durham to make a save just ten seconds into the second half. The Huskies generated a push midway through the second half as Preston Alessio forced a save from Kneis. Down the stretch, Providence applied pressure with several shots, but Durham and the UConn defense saw out the Friars late push to secure their second consecutive clean sheet and third this season.
Providence finished with advantages in shots, 17-11, and shots on goal, 6-5. Both teams were whistled for 26 fouls, with the Friars being shown two yellow cards to the Huskies one. Arredondo scored both UConn goals on three shot attempts, while Durham made six saves in a 90-minute shutout. Durham has recorded at least six saves in three consecutive games.
