STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey defeated Vermont by a final of 4–1, Friday evening. Joey Muldowney scored two while Tyler Muszelik made 30 saves in goal.
The Huskies started the game strong as just 1:52 into the start of the game as Joey Muldowney and Ryan Tattle connected on a give and go to give UConn the 1-0 lead. The two teams continued to battle, with both team's speed on display. Midway through the first period following a UConn penalty, Vermont was able to find the back of the net on the ensuing power play, tying the game at one. Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the period, as they entered the period break tied at one.
The second period was a physical battle, as both teams looked to take the lead. The Huskies had the first opportunity as a Vermont penalty gave them the man advantage, but the Vermont penalty kill prevented the Huskies from taking the lead. Late in the second period, following Vermont's second penalty of the period, the Huskies power play went to work looking to take the lead. UConn kept possession in their offensive zone, and following a Jake Richard shot that rang off the pipe, the Huskies reset and Jake Richard found sophomore Ethan Whitcomb cross ice for the one-time goal giving UConn the 2-1 lead. Shortly after following a faceoff win, Joey Muldowney collected the puck at the point and fired a wrist shot that snuck under the Vermont netminder for his second of the night to give UConn the 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
With the two-goal lead, the Huskies defense shined, limiting the Catamounts offensive chances. Late in the period, following a strong forecheck, the Huskies were able to keep pressure on the Vermont defense, and the persistence paid off as Mike Murtagh was able to sneak the puck through on a wraparound attempt to give UConn the 4-1 lead and secure the win. Tyler Muszelik shined in the third period making 16 of his 30 saves. In addition to the goal scorers, Ryan Tattle, Jake Richard and Trey Scott all pitched in two assists.
