STORRS, Conn. – UConn men's golf head coach Dave Pezzino announced the hiring of Chris Ayers as assistant coach for the Huskies program.
"Chris rose to the top of a deep candidate pool because of who he is and how he approaches the game," Pezzino said. "He's an elite player in his own right, knows the game inside and out, and brings a ton of passion and energy to our program. We are excited to welcome Coach Ayers to Storrs."
Ayers brings a strong competitive playing background and growing coaching resume to the UConn program. A PGA of America associate member working towards his Class A certification, Ayers has been serving as an instructor with First Tee of Connecticut since 2023 while also providing private lessons at Goodwin Park Golf Course and Mulligans Golf Center. He has also volunteered as an assistant coach for Wethersfield High School golf since 2023.
As a player, Ayers has compiled an impressive resume at both the collegiate and amateur levels. He was ranked as the No. 11 junior college golfer in the country in 2017-18 with a 73-stroke average before transferring to Old Dominion University, where he was a three-year starter for the Monarchs. During the 2019-20 season, Ayers posted a 71.7 scoring average, ranking 71st nationally in Division I, and earned first-team All-State honors in Virginia for college golf.
Ayers continued his collegiate career at the University of West Florida, where he earned Academic All-American honors in 2021-22, showcasing his commitment to excellence both on the course and in the classroom.
His competitive accomplishments extend beyond college golf. Ayers captured medalist honors in stroke play at the 2019 Connecticut Amateur and qualified for U.S. Open Sectionals in 2023. Most recently, he won the Manchester Open Connecticut Section Division in 2024, firing a 68 (-4).
