Volleyball Sweeps Marist on Saturday in Storrs

STORRS, Conn. — UConn volleyball improved to 10-1 on the season, sweeping Marist (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center.
The first set between UConn and Marist saw multiple momentum shifts, with both teams capitalizing on their opponents' errors. The Huskies took the early edge, with a kill from Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) igniting the offense. Marist responded with a run, taking a 5-3 lead thanks to kills from Sarah Bumstead and Sara Dasic. UConn quickly regrouped, highlighted by an ace from Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) that tied the score at 6-6. The teams traded leads until UConn broke away with a 5-0 run, highlighted by two aces from McKenna Brand (Lucas, Texas), to jump in front 16-13. UConn maintained this advantage through the end of the set, securing a 25-21 victory with a Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) kill sealing the frame.
UConn snagged an early 5-1 lead in the second. Brand added another ace and Winn and Werkmeister added kills to put the hosts in control. The Huskies hunkered down on the defensive end, with Winn and Jordyn Hughes (Portage, Mich.) stifling Marist with consecutive blocks. Winn continued to shine down the stretch of the second set, fueling UConn's attack and lifting the Huskies to a 25-17 set victory.
The third set began with an early exchange of errors, leading to a tight 3-3 score. UConn started to gain momentum, fueled by three kills from Hanna Tylska (SrodaWielkopolska, Poland), giving the Huskies an 8-6 lead. The duo of Winn and Hughes combined for two more blocks, extending the UConn lead to 12-6. UConn would not look back in the third set, with Tylska and Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) pacing the attack to construct a 19-15 UConn advantage. Tylska dominated on the service line in the homestretch of the third, firing in four powerful aces to seal the straight set victory for the Huskies, claiming the third frame 25-15.
Winn led the Huskies with 11 kills and contributed significantly at the net with five total blocks. Kutlu facilitated the offense by recording 31 assists. Werkmeister added seven kills and two service aces, rounding out her performance with nine digs. Dasic led Marist with seven kills.
UConn will host Sacred Heart tomorrow afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center. The match is set for Sunday, Sept. 21, with action beginning at 3:00 pm.
