Volleyball Bounces Back With Win Over Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- UConn volleyball took down Fairfield on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Stags in five sets (25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 15-9) to move to 7-1 on the season.
Fairfield grabbed the early 6-4 lead, thanks to three kills from Mamie Krubally. An ace from McKenna Brand (Lucas, TX) and kills from Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) and Jess Perry (Nashville, TN) evened the score at 11-11 in the first. Hanna Tylska (Sroda Wielkopolska, Poland) added two kills and Eli Adams (Clarkston, Mi) got on the board early to give the Huskies a 19-16 lead. UConn went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by an ace from Grace Maria (Arlington, Va). The Huskies rode the momentum to a first set victory, 25-19.
Brand and Brenna Wyman (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in aces to continue the UConn domination of the service line, putting the visitors in front 9-6 in the second frame. Fairfield took five of the following six points, with kills from Krubally and Allie Elliott bringing the hosts even at 14-14. The two sides traded points throughout the set, with Perry and Werkmeister pushing Fairfield into a timeout after tying the score at 20-20. Audrey Rome (Sandwich, IL) took over in the closing moments of the second, firing in three consecutive kills to give UConn a 25-23 set victory, as the Huskies went ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Stags responded in the third with a flurry of six straight points, grabbing a 7-2 advantage. Fairfield continued to shine on the offensive end, as Elliot and Emma Bortolotti chipped in kills to keep the hosts in front 11-6. UConn closed the gap to three points, but the Stags went on a 5-0 run to stretch the lead to 17-9. Fairfield rode the momentum to take the third set 25-16.
Werkmeister fired in three kills in the fourth set, answering two aces from Fairfield to keep the score tied at 6-6. Maria and Adams paced the UConn offense with kills in the frame, answering a flurry of Stag points to even the score at 14-14. Zofia Sykut poured in an ace and Elliot added another kill to take an 18-16 lead. The Huskies tied the score at 20-all, but three kills down the stretch from Kubally pushed the match to a fifth set.
Brand and Wyman fired in aces and Werkmeister added two kills to put the Huskies in front 6-5. UConn's defensive intensity ramped up in the fifth set. Adams and Maria anchored the Huskies with three consecutive blocks to give UConn an 11-8 advantage. Werkmeister took over in the fifth with the last three kills to lift the Huskies to a five-set victory.Â
Inside the Numbers:
Rome set a new career-high in kills with 14. Adams set new career-bests in kills (seven) and blocks (six). Brand's four service aces were a career-high. Werkmeister led the Huskies with 18 kills, adding seven digs in the win.
