STORRS – A pair of incoming freshmen for the UConn men's basketball team will represent their home countries at the upcoming FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2025. Jacob Furphy will take the court with the Australia U19 squad, aka the Emus, while Eric Reibe will suit up for the Germany U19 team.
The U19 World Cup will take place from June 28-July 5 of this year in Lausanne, Switzerland. The 16-team event begins with group stage play on June 28, 29 and July 1 before shifting to the knockout stage with the Round of 16 on July 2. The quarterfinals take place on July 4, followed by the semifinals on July 5 and the title game on July 6.
Australia has been slotted into Group D of the tournament along with the United States, Cameroon and France. Germany will compete in Group B with Canada, China and Slovenia.
Furphy will compete for the Australian national team once again and has significant experience with the national team, including a call-up to the senior team for recent games in FIBA Asia Cup qualifying. Reibe also has extensive experience with the German national squad, competing on the U18 squad at the European Championships in 2023 and with the U16 team at the same event in 2022.
UConn's history with the international game comes as recent as the 2024 Olympics, when 2014 graduate Niels Giffey competed for Germany. Ray Allen and Emeka Okafor are among the most notable Huskies to shine on the international stage, winning medals with Team USA at the Olympics in 2000 (gold) and 2004 (bronze), respectively.
