Huskies Come Up Short at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 14th ranked UConn women's hockey team lost to the Providence Friars, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena. UConn moves to 17-6-2 in Hockey East play and 19-11-2 overall this season.
Senior goaltender Tia Chan made her 21st start of the season as the Huskies netminder, making 25 saves.
UConn opened the scoring with five minutes remaining in the first period. Graduate student defender, Sophie Robinson scored her second goal of the season for the Huskies, giving UConn a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies took the one goal lead into the first intermission as UConn edged Providence in shots, 11-10 in the first period.
Providence scored an equalizer one minute into the second period off the stick of Jessie Pellerin.
The game remained knotted up at 1-1 throughout the second period. The Friars led the Huskies in shots, 11-8 in the second frame.
UConn regained the lead early in the third period as junior forward Megan Woodworth scored her fifth goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
The Providence offense surged after the Woodworth goal, scoring three unanswered goals in the third period for the second straight game. The Friars found an equalizer just six minutes after UConn took the lead, as Millie Sirum knotted the game at two. Providence took the lead just two minutes later off the stick of Audrey Knapp, making it 3-2.
The Huskies continued to fight for an equalizer, pulling Chan from net in favor of an extra skater with three minutes remaining, but Providence forward Hannah Johnson sent the puck the length of the ice straight into the back of the Huskies net, sealing the win for Providence.
