Huskies Advance to BIG EAST Championship

LYNCHBURG, Va. — UConn defeated Old Dominion University with a decisive 4-1 victory at Liberty FH Field, powered by a strong second quarter where UConn netted two goals. This semi-final win propelled UConn to the BIG EAST Championship vs. host Liberty.
UConn began the first quarter with assertive offensive pressure against Old Dominion, executing multiple penalty corners, with Sol Simone and Milou Heuker initiating key plays. Despite several shot attempts, including two by Fien Hollander that were blocked and a shot by Simone that hit the post at 7:48, UConn was unable to find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Natalie McKenna remained untested as UConn maintained defensive control. The quarter ended with a score of 0-0.
UConn took the lead early in the second quarter when Pien Prins capitalized on a rebound to score at 16:55, marking her sixth goal of the season. Old Dominion quickly responded, leveling the score with a goal by Sian Emslie at 23:17, assisted by Isabella Decesaris. However, UConn regained the advantage just as the quarter closed, with Prins scoring again on a penalty corner, assisted by Simone and Juana Garcia, at the 30:00 mark. The quarter ended with UConn ahead 2-1.
UConn capitalized on a penalty corner in the third quarter when Hollander scored with assists from Zita Grigoliet and Simone at 37:51, increasing their lead to 3-1. Old Dominion struggled with discipline, receiving three green cards, which hindered their ability to close the gap. UConn maintained their two-goal advantage as the quarter ended with a score of 3-1, securing the win.
UConn secured their advantage in the fourth quarter with Abby Davidson scoring her third goal of the season at the 49:59 mark. Old Dominion's attempts to close the gap were thwarted by UConn's defense, with McKenna and Avianna Wagner making crucial saves. The game concluded with UConn defeating Old Dominion 4-1, advancing them to the BIG EAST Championship.
Prins led the team with two goals, including the game-winner, on three shots. Davidson found the back of the net with her only shot of the game. Hollander contributed a goal and took four shots, two of which were on target. Grigoliet recorded an assist, adding to the team's offensive efforts.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will compete vs. Liberty for the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday November 9 at 1pm.
