STORRS, Conn. — UConn women's field hockey secured a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion University with a decisive overtime goal, overcoming an early deficit.
The match began with UConn facing immediate pressure from Old Dominion. UConn's goalkeeper, Natalie McKenna, made a crucial save against a shot by Amelie Zielcke at 7:41. However, Old Dominion broke through at 10:52 with a goal scored by Sanci Molkenboer, assisted by Sian Emslie and Cosima Perleth. The first quarter concluded with Old Dominion leading 1-0.
UConn found momentum midway through the second quarter with a successful penalty corner. At 29:28, Pien Prins equalized the score with a goal, assisted by Sol Simone, showcasing effective teamwork. Old Dominion had earlier challenged UConn's defense with a penalty corner at 20:44, but McKenna made a crucial save. The quarter concluded with a 1-1 tie, setting the stage for an intense final stretch.
In the third quarter, UConn maintained a strong defensive stance, highlighted by Prins' crucial defensive saves. At 32:57, she denied Old Dominion's Molkenboer, and again at 33:18, she blocked Serena Langendoen's attempt. Despite a green card issued to UConn's Violeta Francese at 40:52, the home team held firm. McKenna contributed with a key save against Emslie at 44:14. The quarter concluded with the score tied at 1-1.
In the fourth quarter, UConn's defense held firm as McKenna made a crucial save against Old Dominion's Isabella Decesaris at 53:44. Despite a green card issued to Emma Larit at 57:20, UConn managed to maintain their defensive stance. The quarter ended with no goals scored, leaving the game tied at 1-1.
The overtime period began with UConn's defense under pressure, as Old Dominion quickly initiated a series of attacks. McKenna, UConn's goalkeeper, played a pivotal role, making crucial saves against shots from Emslie and Langendoen. Despite two penalty corners executed by Madison Zalewski, UConn's defense held firm, blocking further attempts and maintaining a stalemate. The period concluded with the score unchanged at 1-1.
In the second overtime period, UConn secured a decisive victory against Old Dominion. At the 70:45 mark, Simone delivered the game-winning goal after stealing the ball and weaving through the defense, breaking the tie and giving UConn a 2-1 lead. The match concluded with UConn emerging victorious with a final score of 2-1.
McKenna posted seven saves in the match, allowing just one goal. Simone scored one goal and provided an assist, while Prins contributed with a goal of her own.
Their next game will take place on October 26, as they travel to Fairfield, CT, to face Fairfield at noon.
