WSOC Notches Road Win At Providence

PROVIDENCE – The UConn women's soccer team (6-3-2, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) captured a 1-0 victory against Providence College (3-4-2, 0-2-1 BIG EAST) on Wednesday evening at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The Huskies broke through on their first set piece opportunity of the game in the 24th minute. Freshman Maree-Anne Van Doesburg played her corner kick into the box where it found Lydia LeBlanc. The defender drove a shot towards goal but was cleared off the line by a Friars defender.
The ball found redshirt freshman Se-Hanna Mars, who also had her shot blocked. The third time was the charm for the Huskies with senior captain Chioma Okafor curling a shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. It is the 29th career goal for the striker.
Se-Hanna Mars created another opportunity in the 30th minute with a shot from the top of the box. She shielded off a couple of defenders and had her shot knocked away by the keeper for a UConn corner.
UConn secured its sixth shutout of the season with goalkeeper Ava Yamas having to make four saves.
The Huskies have won three-straight against the Friars and are unbeaten in their last six games.
Next up, the Huskies return home against Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 4 for breast cancer awareness night. Kick off is scheduled for 6:35 PM
