Softball takes split on day one of Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UConn softball team (8-6) fell to the Liberty Flames in game one on Saturday afternoon, 3-0. The Huskies bounced back in game two, beating Radford 8-0 in a five inning run rule.
Payton Kinney started in the circle in game one. She went two innings giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout. Hope Jenkins came in relief for Kinney in the third inning, finishing out the game in the circle for the Huskies.
The Flames took an early one run lead in the first inning. Kinney loaded the bases to the first three Flames batters but was able to get three straight outs to limit the damage to one run.
UConn struggled to get anything going offensively off the Liberty pitcher, getting shut out for the first time this season.
Liberty extended their lead in the fourth inning 3-0 putting the game out of the reach for the Huskies.
In the second game against Radford, the UConn offense bounced back as seven Huskies had an RBI. The Huskies had a team high six stolen bases in the win.
Hope Jenkins started on the mound in game two picking up right where she left off in game one. She went the distance only giving up one hit with three strikeouts, earning her fourth win of the season.
UConn opened the scoring in the third inning scoring three runs. Aziah James kick started the offense hitting a double to left center to score Taylor Zatyk making it 1-0 Huskies. James would later come around to score on a wild pitch. Jana Sanden drove in her ninth RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to score Grace Jenkins giving UConn a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies added to their lead in the next inning. Haley Coupal drove in her fifth run of the season with an infield single to score Makenzie Mason. Coupal later came around to score on a Grace Jenkins ground out giving UConn a commanding 5-0 lead.
UConn ended the game in the fifth inning scoring three runs to complete the run rule win. Savannah Ring singled to center to score Sanden. Mason drove in her first RBI of the season on a single to left field to score Ring. Zatyk singled to center to score Mason ending the game in five innings.
The Huskies will close out the Liberty Invitational tomorrow in a double header against Iona beginning at 10:00am.
