STORRS, Conn. – The 15th-ranked UConn women's basketball team (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) closes out 2023 against No. 18 Marquette (12-0, 1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the XL Center. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network (97-9 WUCS).
Sunday's game vs. Marquette is sold out. To celebrate Bleed Blue Year's Eve, fans are encouraged to wear BLUE to the game. The first 500 fans at the XL Center will receive a Bleed Blue T-shirt.
Marquette is UConn's sixth ranked opponent of the season. Four of the Huskies' seven games in December are against top-25 opponents.
The Huskies last played on Dec. 20, a 111-34 win over Toronto Metropolitan in Toronto. The game was senior Aaliyah Edwards' homecoming game. A native of Kingston, Ontario, Edwards had a season-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds in the game.
Freshman KK Arnold set personal bests with 21 points and seven steals. Freshman Ashlynn Shade had her second-straight 20-point performance while freshman Qadence Samuels set career highs with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Shade was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after averaging 21.0 points per game in two wins last week. A UConn freshman has earned the honor in six of seven weeks this season, with Shade winning twice, Arnold three times and Samuels once.
UConn is 17-1 all-time vs. Marquette. The Golden Eagles picked up their first win in the series last season in Milwaukee. This is the first matchup in the series with both teams ranked. UConn travels to Marquette on Jan. 23, 2024.
Marquette moved to 12-0 with a 67-39 win over Bucknell on Dec. 21. It's Marquette's best start to a season in program history. This season, Liza Karlen leads the Golden Eagles with 17.2 points per game. Head coach Megan Duffy is in her fifth season at Marquette.
