Huskies Fall to Xavier at Home

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Xavier in three sets at home Friday night. The Huskies were led by freshman Mya Ayro and junior Taylor Pannell as they posted a combined 16 kills.Â
The Huskies, searching to snap the losing streak, continues to extend it to an eight-game skid. UConn stands at 5-14 overall and 0-7 in BIG EAST play. With a tough contest in the first two sets, Xavier continued to find the answer in the offensive attack making that its fifth conference win and moving to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST action. Â
In the first set, the Huskies put up a fight throughout the set as they weathered multiple scoring runs. UConn would take a timeout down 7-1, but the Huskies wouldn't go away easily. After a 6-0 scoring run to extend Xavier's lead to 16-5, UConn went on a scoring run itself to be within six points forcing a Xavier timeout at 16-10. However, Xavier would fight through and close out the first set at 25-19. Â
Then, more scoring runs would transpire in the second set. UConn would use its two early scoring runs to be up 8-4 at the Xavier timeout. Then, the Musketeers came rolling back to go on a 4-0 scoring run. The score was back-and-forth through the middle of the set as Pannell added four kills to her 8 combined total kills. Junior Doga Kutlu added some support offensively as Kutlu collected nine assists in the set. Kutlu finished the match with a 12th double-double of the season recording 29 assists and 11 digs. Xavier would squeeze by finishing a 25-23 set score.Â
The Musketeers made it hard to gain ground for the Huskies with the added two set lead going into the third set. The Huskies dealt with four scoring runs in the third set. Xavier would force UConn to take a timeout at 13-5. Although Ayro added three kills to her combined total 8 kills, Huskies couldn't stop the multiple scoring runs by Xavier. The Musketeers closed out the set 25-15.Â
The Huskies will be back at it at home against Butler at 4 p.m. ET. The game will feature a Breast Cancer Awareness event to show support to those affected by breast cancer. The game can also be streamed live on Flo Sports. Â
