UConn Women Win ECAC Title

BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn women's track & field team but the finishing touches on an outstanding indoor season by claiming the 2022 ECAC Indoor Championship at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center on Sunday.
UConn wins their 10th ECAC Indoor Championship and the program's first since the 2016 season. The Huskies took home the hardware with 93 total points to finish in front of Northeastern in second place with 62 points.
"The women were in a close competition, right up until the end pulling away with a tremendous performance by our triple jumpers," stated Associate Head Coach Rich Miller. "Jasmine Barrow, Zayin Roe and Felicia Quainoo taking three of top four spots and did it with lifetime bests. And Emma Chee in the pole vault with a big win, between them that was the difference and we pulled away. Continued to have great performances from Mia Nahom week in and week out and another great race today in the 3,000."
"Overall, a great team performance all around from both the men and women. I feel like we continue to get better and show tremendous character and grit on both sides. A great weekend all around."
The Huskies got four wins in the field events with junior Emma Chee (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) winning the pole vault and sophomore Jasmine Barrow (Athens, Ga.) taking the triple jump crown on Sunday and on Saturday juniors Mikyala Rodgers (South Huntington, N.Y.) and Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) took the gold in the weight throw and high jump, respectively.
On the Track…
- Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) took the silver in the 3,000 meters, finishing with a time of 9:23.77 while junior teammate Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) was ninth in 9:39.41.
- In the finals of the mile on Sunday, junior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) led the way with a fifth-place finish in 4:49.67. Senior Emma Krebs (Roxbury, Conn.) was right with her in sixth at 4:50.04. Freshman Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) was ninth at 4:58.37.
- Freshman Brianna Davis (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took sixth place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64 seconds.
- The UConn distance medley relay team of Zydanowicz, freshman Gabby Davis (Franklin Park, N.J.) senior Allie Aslup (Durham, Conn.), and senior Katelyn Romanchick (Trumbull, Conn.) finished fifth with a time of 11:47.23.
In the Field…
- On Sunday, Chee got the win in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.00. meters, repeating as the ECAC Champion in the event after her win in 2020.
- The Huskies claimed three top-five spots in the triple jump led by Barrow who won the gold with a leap of 12.46 meters, setting a new PR. Freshman Zayin Roe (Richmond, Va.) took home the bronze in third place with a new PR jump of 12.41 meters. Fellow freshman Felicia Quainoo (Metuchen, N.J.) was fourth and also hit a new PR with a leap of 12.33 meters.
- On Saturday, Rodgers put the finishing touches on a stellar indoor season by winning the ECAC Championship in the weight throw. Rodgers backed-up her win at the BIG EAST meet last weekend by besting the field on Saturday with a throw of 19.53 meters.
- Classmate Mroczkowski also grabbed an ECAC title on Saturday, winning the high jump off her BIG EAST win last weekend. Mrockowski finished with a height of 1.75 meters, clearing it on her first attempt to deliver her the gold medal.
- On Friday, junior Emily Lavarnway (Ovid, N.Y.) took second place in the pentathlon, claiming silver by totaling 3,972 points, a new career-high point total. She won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds and won the shot put with a heave of 11.97 meters, both new PRs. She was second in the 800 meters with a PR time of 2:17.69
