SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The UConn women's tennis team came-up just short on the road at Bryant on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Bulldogs in dual match action. The Huskies fall to 7-6 on the season with their third-straight loss.
"We lost a heartbreaker 4-3 to Bryant today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We played without our number one player Julieanne Bou due to injury, and Bryant came out on top. We got off to a slow start in doubles and hat can happen when you have teams moving up in the lineup and a newly paired team of Leonie and Selen playing together for the first time. Either way, we put ourselves behind going into the singles."
After dropping the opening doubles point, the Huskies split the six singles matches against Bryant. Sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) stepped up into the No. 1 spot and posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ada Boru, 6-4 and 6-3. Hoppe wins her 16th singles match on the season, a team-high.
Junior Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) picked-up a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Caitlyn Munson as she improves to 7-3 over her last 10 singles matches. Freshman Isabel Petri-Bere (Lund, Sweden) won a three-set battle at No. 4 over Camila Baeza, losing the first set 6-2 but answering back 6-4 and 6-4. It was her 13th win on the year.
"Leonie stepped up and had a nice straight set victory at number one. Caroline and Isabel also had nice wins, playing up one position in the singles line-up. We will look to bounce back against BU this weekend."
The Huskies head to Boston University on Saturday, April 2nd at 1 pm.
