DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The UConn women's tennis team wrapped up their spring break trip to Florida with a 7-0 win at Bethune-Cookman, extending their winning streak to five-straight. The Huskies improved to 7-3 on the season as they head back home.
"I am very pleased the team had a great week of training and two wins on our spring training trip," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "These outdoor practices and matches will prepare us for our outdoor season starting next week."
Bethune-Cookman was short players and forced to default at two singles spots and at a doubles spot. The Huskies won both of their doubles matches with Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) getting a 6-0 win at No. 1 over Afrika Smith and Diarra Thomas for their third-straight win together. At No. 2, Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) earned a 6-0 win over Selene Kentish and Lauren McLin.
In singles, Hoppe played at No. 1 and won a three-set battle with Smith, 3-6, 7-1 and 10-7, her fifth-straight victory to improve to 14-8 this season. At No. 2, Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Thomas to claim her 14th win of the year while Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) won her match at No. 3 over Kentish, 6-2 and 6-1. Isabel Petri-Bere (Lund, Sweden) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner to close out the afternoon at No. 4 over McLin.
