Softball wins in a thriller, finish the Cougar Classic a perfect 5-0

Charleston, SC – UConn wins in thrilling fashion on a walk off hit securing a weekend sweep in the Cougar Classic.
In the final game of the weekend the Huskies took down the Appalachian State Mountaineers 7-6.
UConn rode the hot hand giving Meghan O'Neil the start on Sunday. She went three innings with two strikeouts.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the second inning off the bat of freshman Lexi Hastings. She hit a triple to left center scoring Sami Barnett giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Delaney Nagy would come in relief for O'Neil in the fourth. She would be quickly relieved by fellow freshman Elise Sokolsky. Sokolsky would go on to pitch six crucial innings for the Huskies striking out seven. She would get credited with the win in this one.
The Mountaineers would tie the game at one in the fourth. The Huskies responded in the fifth inning with four runs giving UConn a 5-1 lead. Reese Guevarra singled, scoring two. Rosie Garcia, the later hero for the Huskies, would double to right center scoring Guevarra. Jana Sanden joined in on the hit party scoring Garcia on single to right extending the UConn lead.
The Mountaineers would respond in the sixth with four runs of their own knotting the game at 5. The game would head to extras where the Mountaineers would score a run in the top half of the eighth. The Huskies responded with their backs against the wall on a sac fly off the bat of Erika Coreth sending us to the ninth tied at 6.
Garcia delivered the game winner for the Huskies on a gapper to right center scoring Marcelino securing the win for the Huskies. This is Garcia's first walk off hit as a Husky.
The Huskies had an impressive weekend on the mound and at the plate. The UConn pitching staff finished the weekend with a stagerring 0.60 ERA, striking out 37 hitters. Husky hitters held a collective .286 batting average, scoring 27 runs, with 38 hits.
UConn now moves to 8-6 on the year after an impressive bounce back weekend in Charleston. They will be in action next weekend at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, NC.
