New Hampshire Beats Huskies in Series Opener

STORRS, Conn. – New Hampshire's Chase Stevenson finished with a pair of goals including the game-winner in the third to deal the UConn Huskies a 3-1 loss in a Hockey East match-up Friday night at the XL Center.
The Huskies dropped their third-straight and fall to 9-10-0 and 6-6-0 in Hockey East with the loss. UNH picked-up their fifth-straight win as they moved to 12-10-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the league.
UConn went up 1-0 late in the second on senior Carter Turnbull's (Nanaimo, British Columbia) fourth goal of the season. UNH's Colton Huard tied it up on the power play just over two minutes later to send the game to the final stanza tied at 1-1.
Stevenson provided the go-ahead goal at 8:51, scoring on a rebound in front and then put home an empty-netter to ice away the win in the closing seconds. UNH held a 35-30 edge on shots and killed off all three UConn power play chances.
Wildcat goaltender Mike Robinson stopped 29 in grabbing the win. UConn grad transfer Darion Hanson (East Bethel, Minn.) stopped 32 in the loss.
1st period:
The teams played a tight first period with UConn holding an 8-7 shot edge. The Huskies picked-up a late power play that carried over into the second period.
2nd period:
The Huskies grabbed the lead at 17:16 as Turnbull scored the game's first goal, coming off rebound. UConn's Jake Spetz (Oak Ridge, N.J.) threw one on net with freshman Jake Veilleux (South Windsor, Conn.) banging at the rebound. Veilleux collected the puck behind the net and threw it back on net where Turnbull found the puck and punched it in for a 1-0 lead.
UNH got a power play chance at 18:16 and found the tying goal at the 19:19 mark off the stick of Huard. Jackson Pierson loaded up a big shot from the point that deflected off teammate Liam Devlin in front and to Huard on the left wing who buried on an open net to make it 1-1.

3rd period:
The Wildcats took the lead at 8:51 as Stevenson scored his first on a rebound. Ryan Verrier blasted a shot from just inside the blueline and the rebound bounced in front in the slot where Stevenson found it and buried it near the right post to go up 2-1.
The Huskies got a late power play chance at 16:44 and were able to pull Hanson for the two-man advantage but couldn't solve Robinson. Stevenson tapped in an empty netter off a long shot by Eri MacAdams with 10 seconds to go to seal it up, 3-1.
