STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team got their first chance this fall season to hit the court as they took part in the Quinnipiac Invitational, a blind dual match event with three days of matches against QU, Army and Fairfield. The event was held in Storrs at the UConn Tennis Courts.
"This was a nice event to start off our fall season," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Our team was looking forward to playing some outside competition, and this blind dual event was a great way to kick off the year."
"Although we had some injuries and were without 3 players, the team performed very well winning 12 out of 21 matches," said Marshall. "We were led by our senior captain JulieAnne Bou and Aleksandra Karamyshev who were both undefeated in singles this weekend, each going 3-0. Our newest Husky, freshman Isabel Petri-Bere had a nice opening weekend, securing her first Husky wins in both singles and doubles."
Senior Julianne Bou (Baymon, Puerto Rico), an All-BIG EAST player last season, got off to a great start with three singles wins over the weekend. Bou opened the weekend with a three-set comeback win, dropping the first set to Fairfield's Scarlett Hutchinson, 7-6 (5) but came back to win 6-3, 10-5. She got a win over Army's Elizabeth Gilbert, 6-0, 6-1, and Quinnipaic's Kamilla Nella, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) also had a 3-0 singles weekend and also collected a pair of doubles victories. Karamyshev won 6-3, 6-4 over Fairfield's Amanda Nowak and then a three-setter over Army's Paulina Feoli, 6-3, 5-6, 10-0. She wrapped her weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win over QU's Jordan Bradley.
In doubles, she paired with freshman Isabel Petri Bure (Sweden) to get wins over Fairfield, 6-2, and Army, 7-5. Petri Bure got a singles win over QU's Jeanna Koo on Sunday, 6-2, 6-4.
The Huskies will be right back in action next weekend when they host the UConn Invitational, another blind dual match event, against Binghamton, LIU and Rhode Island.
