FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The UConn men's golf team began the 2021-22 season with a thrilling finish at the Doc Gimmler Invitational that ended just one stroke short of a victory.
The Huskies registered four birdies on the 16th hole of Sunday's final round and added another on No. 17, but ultimately finished one stroke behind Columbia in the three-round event held at the Bethpage State Park Red Course.
UConn's aggregate 6-over, 285-280-281=846 tied with Harvard (846) for second place, one shot behind Columbia's 5-over, 281-278-286=845 in the 14-team field. It was UConn's sixth Top 2 finish in its last 11 events, dating back to last season.
Leading the Huskies' effort was senior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), whose even par, 69-72-69=210 gave him a ninth-place finish, the 11th Top 10 finish of his college career. Nelson also upped his sub-70 rounds to 10 and his career par-or-better rounds to 27.
Also capturing a Top 10 finish in the 78-player field was UConn sophomore Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who fired a 1-over, 71-69-71=211 to tie for 10th, his fourth career Top 10, his fifth sub-70 round and 13th round of par or better. Manuel also led the tournament in Par 5 scoring, playing those holes in 6-under par.
Sophomore Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) posted his third career Top 20 finish with a 3-over, 72-70-71=213, good enough for a tie for 14th place.
Also for the Huskies, senior Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) shot the finest tournament total of his college career with a 6-over, 73-73-70=216, with his third career round of par-or-better, to finish in a tied for 27th place.
Freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.), playing in his first college event, finished in a tied for 31st place with a 7-over, 74-69-74=217, which included his first sub-70 round.
Playing as an individual, UConn junior Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) ended in a tie for 60th place with a 15-over, 76-73-76=225.
UConn continues its season on Sept. 20-21, competing in the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Conn.
