KINGSTON, R.I. – An explosive six-run second inning propelled UConn (7-9) to a 10-7 road victory at Rhode Island (0-9) Wednesday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex. The Huskies were led to the victory via a trio of doubles from Reese Guevarra, Taylor Zatyk and Jana Sanden. Meghan O'Neil garnered the win and improved to 4-2 overall. She pitched the full seven and tossed nine strikeouts.
Guevarra opened up the scoring for UConn in the top of the first, coming in off Briana Marcelino's single up the middle to give the Huskies an early one-run lead.
The offense erupted in the second inning…putting six more on the board to push the margin to seven. The Huskies picked up two of their aforementioned three doubles in the second. Guevarra's came first as she smacked hers to center field, rounding Makenzie Mason and Madisyn Estorga in the process. Aziah James followed with a single to the shortstop…Guevarra shifted to third, then crossed home on a throwing error to put UConn ahead by four. Sanden sent her double skipping down the left field line to score James. A ground out closed out the inning for UConn, but not before Zatyk's single rounded Marcelino and Sanden which increased the lead to 7-0. Cali Jolley and James would add another pair of runs to the UConn total in the third to balloon the advantage to nine.
The Rams cracked the scoring seal in the bottom of the third on a 2 RBI homer to left field, then again in the fifth on a fly out to right field that brought the runner at third in.
UConn responded with a run in the top of the sixth…James picked up her second of the day to make it 10-3, Huskies.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rhode Island mounted an attempted rally on O'Neil and the UConn defense. The Rams garnered four runs on a 2 RBI single up the middle and a 2 RBI double to right field. A fly out to left center would be the end for URI, locking down the result for the Huskies.
