JUNIOR TIES FOR INDIVIDUAL TITLE
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Led by junior Jared Nelson, who tied for the individual championship, the UConn men's golf team recorded its fourth straight Top Five finish of the season with a second place in the Bash at the Beach.
The 11-team tournament, which finished Tuesday, was held at the Par 72 Surf Golf & Beach Club, and sponsored by Appalachian State.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) was outstanding throughout the three-round event, firing an 8-under 68-70-70=208, to tie Jacksonville State's Quim Vidal Mora (73-68-67=208) for the top spot in the 61-player field. It is the best finish for Nelson since coming to UConn from Siena as a sophomore. He tied for second in Par 5 scoring, playing the Par 5s in 2-under for the three rounds and he was tied for third in total birdies, with five.
Nelson's solid play sparked UConn to an aggregate 13-under, 281-282-288=851, eight strokes behind Team champion Jacksonville State (843). Appalachian State (843), Florida A&M (869) and William & Mary (882) rounded out the top five.
Nelson had plenty of help from his UConn teammates, starting with senior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.), who also notched a Top Five finish with a solid, 4-under 69-70-73=212, to finish fifth.
Freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) barely missed a Top 10 finish of his own when his 1-over 72-70-75=217 placed him in a tie for 12th place. Freshman Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.) was just behind Dallahan, finishing in a tie for 18th place with a 3-over, 72-72-75=219.. Freshman Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) ended up in a tie for 22nd place with a 5-over, 77-74-70=221.
The Huskies as a team were second in Par 5 scoring (-8) and third in total birdies (16). It was UConn's second second-place finish of the spring season, to go with a first and a fifth in the four events so far.
UConn will return to South Carolina for its next event, competing on March 26-28 at the Furman Invitational, held at the Furman Golf Club in Greenville.
