STORRS, Conn – The University of Connecticut women's swimming and diving team took down Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon 157-122.
UConn continued to build off their impressive swims at the Bucknell invitational. The Huskies started the meet with energy and confidence finishing first and second in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Kayla Mendonca, sophomore Angela Gambardella, junior Charlotte Proceller, and senior Anderson Linnea took home first place by five seconds with a time of 1:46.41. The dominance wouldn't end there as UConn would go on to take first in the events following the relay including a sweep of the 50-yard freestyle by freshman Maggie Donlevy, sophomore Kayla Mendonca and senior Lena Redisch.
One of the highlights of the meet was in the 100-yard butterfly when Junior Anna Wenman secured first place as part of a Husky sweep. Not only did the sweep energize the crowd and team, but the win by Wenman was her first career collegiate victory.
"I'm really happy with the way our team has performed, we have really been putting in a lot of work in the pool. We have been getting down and training hard and to see the results we saw at Bucknell we are trying to continue to ride that wave. It feels really good to see the training coming through and to see the results we are putting up including winning today is really great." Said Wenman.
Freshman diver Julia Pioso would add onto the UConn performance getting a personal best in the women's 1 meter diving. Along with the personal best score Pioso also secured her zones time in diving and will be representing UConn in the future for diving.
"After Bucknell it was nice to have a short break and rest before coming back. We were able to use that break to refocus and come back strong in training this week and today. It felt really good to be back home and be in front of these amazing fans and felt great to get a zone cut and I am just now focused on finishing the season strong." Said Pioso.
UConn would finish the meet strong with a couple more victories and come away with the 157-122 victory of Southern Connecticut State University.
