Huskies Wrap Up Weekend at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The UConn women's tennis team competed a the Navy Blue and Gold Invitational over the weekend with sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) advancing into the finals of the singles B Flight to lead the Huskies.
Karamyshev, playing in her home state, picked-up three wins to advance into the finals on Sunday. She opened her tournament by beating Towson's Sarah Pspischill, 6-2 and 7-5. In the quarters she took down Jackie Nannery of George Mason, 6-1 and 6-4 and then earned her spot in the finals with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lauren Gish of UNC Wilmington. On Sunday she came up short of grabbing the flight title, falling to Kacey Moore of host Noavy, 7-5, 6-3.
In the A Flight, senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) lost her opening match in a three-set battle with Maryland's Minorka Miranda, but rebounded to grab three wins in the consolation bracket. Bou's opening match went to Miranda, 6-2, 5-7, 13-11.
She picked-up a win over Statsha Petrova of Seton Hall who had to retire in the second set to injury. She beat Paige La of George Mason, 6-3, 6-2 and then Arina Gumerova of Seton Hall, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, Bou and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) got a win in the A Flight, beating Katrina Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju of Navy, 8-0 before losing in the quarters. In the B Flight, juniors Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) and Denise Lai (Setauket, NY) picked up an opening win over Brianna Gibbs and Lauren Splett of George Mason, 8-4.
The Huskies will be at home on Wednesday, October 13 to host their only dual match of the fall against Quinnipiac at 3 pm before closing out the fall season next weekend at the Brown Invitational.
