Softball Caps Capital Classic with 9-3 Win Over Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The UConn softball team closed out the final day of The Capital by knocking off host school Sacramento in blowout fashion, 9-3, Sunday afternoon in Northern California. The Huskies improve to 11-4 on the season.
Samantha Barnett (2-4) led the charge for UConn with a pair of runs and an RBI, Briana Marcelino (1-2) second with two runs of her own. Kiwi McDaniel (1-3) notched a run and a couple of RBI's while Marybeth Olson (1-3) and Carli Cutler (1-4) each chipped in a run and RBI as well. Olivia Sappington (1-3) and Devon Casazza also added runs for the Huskies and Reese Guevarra (2-5) provided an RBI.
Olson improved to 6-0 on the year, tallying eight strikeouts through six innings in the circle.
After both teams went three-up and three-down through the first two innings, the Huskies broke the scoreless tie with a run in the third. Casazza started the inning being walked and after a couple ground outs, she had advanced all the way to third. Casazza would come around on the very next play to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Barnett put the Huskies ahead by two, then UConn added a pair of runs in the fifth to increase the advantage to three. James was walked, then advanced to second after Marcelino was hit by the pitch. Sappington followed with a single to right field and suddenly the Huskies had the bases loaded. A couple plays later, McDaniel knocked a single to left field scoring Sappington and Marcelino to give UConn a 4-1 lead.
Sacramento State cut the lead to one with a pair of runs in the sixth, but UConn blew the game open in the seventh to grab the six-run victory. Marcelino got things started with a single up the middle, advancing to second on Sappington's sac bunt. Olson stepped up and delivered a single up the middle of her own allowing Marcelino to come around and score. Olson notched a run off Barnett's double-bagger down the right field line then McDaniel gave UConn a 7-3 lead after Cutler reached second on a fielders choice. A double dose of thefts occurred on the ensuing play as Cutler stole second and Barnett stole home. Cutler provided the finishing touches with a run off Guevarra's single to center field.
